Why You Should Use an Interactive Online Whiteboard

Picture this: You’re taking an online class or training, or maybe you’re attending a virtual workshop or summit. The presenter is asking for feedback from the group, and so far, no one has responded. Or maybe, people are responding, but the presenter is recording the responses on a Google spreadsheet and can’t quite keep track of what’s what and who’s who.

And let’s be real – online presentations can sometimes be... well... boring.
Enter interactive virtual whiteboards. They are third-party platforms that allow users to collaborate in a remote environment. Of course, that is one con to using virtual whiteboards—you are often asking people to leave your current platform, where it be Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc.

However, this is a case where the pros outweigh the cons. Virtual whiteboard platforms typically utilize a blank canvas or template. And a pro of virtual whiteboards is real-time collaborations between presenters, audience members or students. So, while you’re interacting with the board, you can see others doing so as well. It’s quite exciting to be dragging and dropping on the board and seeing others do the same!

What features are there?

Whiteboard features vary from platform to platform but they include recording, live chat, freeform drawing, widgets such as post-it notes and stickers, and the addition of media such as photos, videos and documents. It’s a great way to get your audience engaged and all on the same page – literally. One of the biggest benefits of using a virtual whiteboard is encouraging people to use their “hands” so that they are active participants and retaining important information.

Additionally, these whiteboard platforms can record or capture data, so that the presenter (you!) can focus on what's really important – presenting, interacting and building relationships. For example, the platform Mural can integrate with your Google account or OneDrive so that information is automatically organized and placed where you need it.

The best thing about virtual whiteboards? They’re fun! And when it comes to making a memorable presentation or course, it should be fun as well as educational.  See our Tech Tuesday demo of a virtual whiteboard platform below!
